If the bill is under your name and you have been a customer for awhile with no delinquent payments you are automatically a preferred customer and qualify for an upgrade every year or so no matter the contract. Everyone else under your name gets an upgrade every 24 months with a new 24 month plan.

i got the phones on Jan 1 2010. my upgrade was eligible on Jan 2 2011. i got 2 phone lines on the plan, at the same time. my wife's line is eligible for an upgrade on Sep 9 2011. either way, she wants to get an iPhone when she has an upgrade available. i have been late a couple times on the bill, but not to the point that the bills over lapped.

Thats what I was told a week ago by an at&t rep when I got my iphone 4. We have 5 on our plan all iphones and highest data package.
