ALOT of the old games are now considered "abandonware" and are free to play. You'll just need DOSBox.

I found an emulator and original sim city gile last night. I have been enjoying the 1989 graphics!

I have read a lot of game players saying maps were too small, no mass transit stuff (subways, monorails, etc), and a few other issues. I figure being the Sims line of games, they will just sell that stuff in a Bonus feature or add on game pack, for another 20$.

I would like to get the game, do not get me wrong, but I love my Simcity 4.

The hate is mainly being driven by the server instability and always on drm. I don't have it so I can't comment, but I've read that EA is actively upgrading servers.
