If I follow that one and flash my phone, will I lose all my contacts, apps, and so on?

You can use an app in the market called titanium backup, it will back up all of your apps, app data, contacts, settings, etc. I'd recommend the paid version unless you want to go through and hit install then ok for every app you re-install.

How about for my Eris?

To be honest when it comes to phones I have no clue what to look for. If 2.2 would run without problems I'd rather go with that. 2.1 is a little laggy.

How about upgrading the Evo or the Galaxy S?

I rooted my friends EVO the other night but it was a PITA to do compared to my Aria.
Here's a page on how to do it and I wish I had found this when I did his cause it looks MUCH easier.

Not an apple nuthugger. I just have an IP4. This is for my girlfriends phone.

People say it's quicker, but it seems about the same to me. Fred, if you're going to bother with rooting, you may as well just change roms, it's not that hard.

Question about this recommendation from Bryan... so basically I need to Root my phone and then flash it correct?

In that thread they're up to V39, guessing version 39. Does that mean I need to Flash 39 different things to get it to work?

Root it, titanium backup, then flash v39 of the rom, you don't have to flash every version, lol. Make sure before you flash it that you copy the titanium backup folder to your computer if you can, just in case.
