android messaging apps

Need some recommendations for some good ones. Updated my phone software and it broke my messenging app; it no longer plays notifications when I am in the conversation so I miss things when we are both sending at the same time. So I need that feature, and the option to customize colors would be nice. I downloaded another stock samsung app which seems to have merged with my other one; it works but all the send and receive lines are white and I cant change it. Found a lot of apps that seemed good but no notification sound when viewing. So any suggestions?

Does it play a sound when you are in the conversation texting? I tried textra but it never would make a sound unless I exited out.

I like Textra as well. It always plays sounds when I receive a message and can even be set to play an additional tone as a reminder if you don't respond to the first one

Hangouts ftw

I liked Google hangouts but I had issues sending mms because the stock app and hangouts wouldn't resize to the correct size. You can change Textra to resize to what you need. Example: verizon can send/rreceive larger pics than other providers.
