Is this possible? I have a 500GB external Hard Drive that I use, and was wondering if a password can be added on for security. Will I need a 3rd party software to add to it? Pros / Cons?

A password is easily circumvented. If it's sensitive info and you're on Win, consider using BitLocker. It transparently encrypts/decrypts your files, so even if you lose your drive, noone will be able to access the files. -

I would say just some files, like personal and business taxes, home docs, etc. I have customer pics of their vehicles, estimates, which that i'm not too worried about. Just concerned about personal/business..Originally posted by abecx View PostComment

bitlocker is probably the easiest way to go, unless you have not bought the drive yet. If you haven't you can get an encrypted drive which will have built in software.Comment

Just going with what you said earlier, if these are important small files, you might want to get an encrypted USB thumbdrive. Much more reliable than an external hard drive.Comment

Also make note that if you encrypt these files with BitLocker one one computer, and you want to read them on another computer, you are not going to be able to do so. They'll only be able to be viewed if you plug that drive into the original computer that did the encrypting, or if you carry around the however-long BitLocker key written down so you can enter it when you want to view the files.Originally posted by sosoe View PostComment
