Mac laptop crash

My sister has a Mac laptop about 3 years old or so. she powered it up and only a folder icon came up, googled it and found its a hard drive crash. So she messed with it (not sure why) but now it wont power up. any one know if its recoverable or at least able to save the contents of the hard drive?
