We knew this in the very first episode of season 5 during the flash forward when he bought the gun from the dude at Denny's.

I don't think the cancer will be the end of him. It showed him with a full head of hair at the beginning, he looked healthy to me.

The flash forward scene at the very beginning, when he visited his own house. It was obviously in the future and he had a full head of hair and beard, he didn't appear sick. Get it now?
