Anybody else seen it yet? It's basically Apollo 13 in 2015 but it still doesn't take away from how damned good it is. Matt Damon was excellent.... hell, everybody was except for maybe Kristen Wiig. Her character really didn't even need to be in it. She just had a couple of witty lines and that was it. Just stood around for the most part. Other than her though the movie was excellent. It is pretty long though so pee before going.

I thought it was pretty good. Some of the CGI with the storms was a little over the top but otherwise the camera work was spectacular and it's a great story. NASA was involved with the production and many of the things he did on the surface have been tested and are planned for use in future missions.

I caught it the other night and really enjoyed it. Not over the top like other movies of the genre (Red Planet and Mission to Mars come to mind) and well acted. Seemed to be mostly technically accurate with the backing of NASA except for maybe the storm that the movie starts off with.

I agree. The wife and I both liked it a lot. Parts of it were fairly predictable but that didn't spoil the movie for me. I really like the large panoramic shots of mars; easily the best visual images of mars in a movie that I can remember.Originally posted by Jose View PostI caught it the other night and really enjoyed it. I should have added that I caught it in 3D because I didn't want to wait another hour for the next showing and I had a couple of passes from when I saw the last Hobbit movie in IMAX 3D. That showing got screwed up so I didn't have to pay extra to see The Martian (although technically I already did). Seeing it in 3D added nothing to the movie for me and it bothers me that more movies are being shown with this option and a premium has to be paid for it. I would have rather seen it in plain IMAX with upgraded sound rather than 3D.Originally posted by LANTIRN View PostI agree. The wife and I both liked it a lot. Yeah if the storm were possible his exit strategy wouldn't have been. Another flaw would be the affects of gravity. It's roughly 1/3 as strong on Mars as here, meaning Matt Damon would weigh less than 70 pounds on the planet.Originally posted by Jose View PostSeemed to be mostly technically accurate with the backing of NASA except for maybe the storm that the movie starts off with.
Also the atmospheric pressure on Mars peaks at slightly less than .2 psi compared to roughly 15 psi here on Earth. You saw the movie so you can imagine how certain things he did wouldn't work in those conditions. Imagine what a car radiator hose does when hot, that's 15 psi.
