I think you mean caliber (not size). If you haven't shot any of those guns I suggest you either go to a range GTG and ask to try out some various guns in different "calibers" or rent some different guns out. You want to pick a caliber that you are comfortable with in a size gun that you can conceal.

I occasionally CC a 1911 full size and as well as XD Service both in .45. They are both heavy guns and you want to make sure you have a good belt and holster to make things easier on you. My personal preferred CC is a 1911 Ultra Carry.

That would be me I have several thousand rounds through my Custom Classic II that I've owned since 2003 or 2004. Not one hiccup. Hell not even the Glock 27 I sold you last year can claim that honor LOL! Although after that one incident it performed flawlessly.

Agree, look other places than 1911 for ccw. I love my Springfield Loaded 1911 and it's my baby, but I wouldn't carry it everyday.

I carry a PX4 Sub Compact .40 and love it.

I got to add now. Neither of my XD9s (have three and have owned 6) nor my Springfield 1911 (circa 1991 the last of the billet frames and slides) have ever had a failure to feed, extract or fire. And I have shot thousands of rounds through them. My 1911 has easily had 2,000 and my full size XD9s have had roughly a thousand each.

I got a 1911 for my first handgun but as of right now haven't planned to get my carry license yet but if I did I think I could but I'm also a bigger guy.

I ended up getting a Rock Island Armory 1911 in 9mm that was on consignment in a local shop. So far only been to the range once and ran 150 of the Federal brass rounds with no issues.

With its weight and caliber its recoil is light and is going to be a great range gun.

I would suggest going to a range and shoot a variety of brands/types of guns after you've held a few to see how you like it in your hands. The ones that pass that test take for a test drive and go from there.

Hogue also makes a nice grip for the 1911 that I put on mine and really like.

I agree with the others, 1911 is not for the new comer into CCW's. Go go go go go to the range. Everyone has an opinion and not one of them will be the same, so the only person who matters is you and what is comfortable. Rent/borrow a few pistols and feel it out.

Also if you are very new to shooting, I recommend taking classes to get comfortable with shooting in different situations or to just go to the range a bunch until you feel comfortable.

Agreed, and don't get hung up on caliber. The performance of all the popular self defense pistol calibers is very close when using a high quality ammo. The key is shot placement, which mean lots and lots of practice. Personally I would recommend 9mm for your first pistol. It is by far the cheapest to shoot, and will allow you to get plenty of trigger time. Everything else equal, it has low recoil and allows for quick follow up shots.

Also if you are wanting a CCW consider if you will actually be willing to carry the pistol. I think there are some people that pickup a full size pistol, carry it religiously for a couple of weeks, and then leave it at home. A small pocket .380 that gets carried everyday is better than the full size glock that sits at home. I would start with a sub-compact or compact glock or XD at the range, and move on from there. Also a good holster and gun belt make a huge difference in comfort and concealment so factor that into your cost.

x2 on going with a 9mm. I got rid of my .45s because it got so expensive to shoot they just sat in the safe for a year. The 9mms I take out often. The coolest, biggest gun is doing you no good if you can't afford to practice with it.

Thats not true, my .454 alaskan does me a lot of good sitting in the safe!

I agree with the 1911 is not a good cc for a newbie but it is a great cc for an experienced hand

oh and my colt's and kimber's, and customs shoot just fine with no malfunctions though I doubt anyone believes it

they suffer not the limp wrist
