Gun safety is learned by showing your children, not by hiding it from them.

My carry stays with one in the chamber same with my shotgun and a couple others that are hidden.
We have no kids and two 70 pound very attentive boxers. So we don't have to worry about curious kids and have the added benefit of the early warnings the dogs will give.

My shotgun is chambered, safety on, in my closet. I, too, have young children and have showed it to them and explained the difference between toy and real. I think chambered is the only way, and I'm not convinced with the whole "rack the slide" see BG run thing. I'd want to put a bead on someone silently, and then let them know their options. I'll be in the market for a hand gun soon, and I'm thinking about keeping it in one of those Gunvault safes, with the 4 finger quick access combos.

If someone comes into my house, the only moment I want them to consider their options is when I have a gun pointed at them and they are caught off guard. I don't care to get into a shooting match in my house, so I don't want them to know where I'm at. And furthermore, I don't want to deter them before I encounter them because I'd like to be able to identify them for my own safety.
It just takes a firm grasp to turn it on...
If it gets to that point, they would have already been met by my 3 dogs...

I still keep the XD locked up in a Gunvault in my nightstand.
Anybody have one of those shotgun holders that go on the bed rails? I was thinking about that and securing the trigger well somehow.

If it comes down to me needing a weapon in my house, I'd rather let the 00 Buck do the talking and not the action on a shotgun. If it would come down to me racking the slide it would 99% come down to pulling the trigger too, just another half second to let mr badguy try something.

If not....may god be with the person who tries to come thru my front door.
