My only let down, even though I have hunted all my life, is that I have hunters sympathy. Not too sure that I will enjoy killing for the sport of it.

Anyways...the 22LR. Good gun? Or would you go with a .17?

I can accurately shoot it to 1200 yards if I have wind at 10mph or less, but at that range it's .22LR energy delivery.

But this is why there are more than one class of long range. People simply enjoy different types of shooting. Mine is at animals.

But, I also compete in the service rifle competition with a completely factory 20" M16A1 and do just fine with iron sights out to 600 yards. I like all the skill based competitions. controlling your breathing, squeezing your trigger while holding steady - that's shooting skill.

    1. Do you use open sight or scope?
    2. Do you use a 16 22 26 28 or 30 and better barrel length?
    3. Do you use a rest, sit, stand, sticks or kneel?
    4. Do you use a stock trigger or 22 23#?

Of course you don't have to answer these questions, but unless you are shooting a 500 dollar open sight rifle with a 16" barrel and a stock trigger, standing up, some might consider you ..."cheating".

They sure are neat to look at though, the gunsmith that built my last rifle was one of the first guys to build a rail/open class gun.

Not necessarily. I have another buddy that is fixing to get into it with a duplicate to Frank's (one I have been speaking about) rifle. Surly offering another option that many are leaning to isn't the wrong thing to say here. If I remember right, the OP said that money wasn't the problem. Why not get a sweet BR?

Personally I do not enjoy range shooting of any kind. Its boring as hell to me, but I know several guys that shoot long range. I go once a year, maybe twice to make sure everything is shooting straight and the rest is in the field hunting. But if you are gonna get into it, start off with something nice for the reason. Expecially if money isnt holding you back.

Edit: My bad. He didnt say anything about money, but I quote, "I would like to do it right the first time". Sounds like a BR to me IMO.

Having said that, and to 5.0_CJ's cheating thread...the record for 1000 was made with a light weight 11lb 6mm Dasher. If I remember right, it had something like 1500 rounds cycled through it before the shoot.
