Maybe call the NRA to do a range evaluation and give their advise for upgrades. They have experts that will do that for a small fee.

They have overhangs already installed. I heard this and was trying to figure how it was possible. If the round was indeed an fmj maybe it ricocheted off the berm.

Yeah that's possible. It's important to have the berm surrounded on all sides by steel plate to prevent that from happening.

lol @ people in this thread comparing noise to bullets, have you guys lost your minds? I stopped going there almost 10 years ago when it became unsafe. That place needs some serious upgrades, people getting shot while mowing their lawns is unacceptable.

I was there two weeks ago and that place was a mad house. Kids were playing on the berms while people were putting up targets. Kids running around without their parents, well until the range guy saw them. They don't have enough staff for the amount of people out there. In my opinion it's not near as fun to go there as it used to be. I've had at least 4 loaded guns pointed at me the last few times I've been, at least once a trip if you go to the pistol range.

I live downrange (not direct inline, but close enough. The neghborhood is right across rowlett rd from me). The noise isnt bad, but its certainly noticible.

You have to be aiming at something other than the target to go over the berm and do it conciously. The issue is idiots behind the trigger, not running the range.

Unfortunatly they are responsible for the idiots they allow on their range. That means designing the range to be as idiot proof as possible.

IIRC there was a thread on here about this range and people shooting at the powerlines behind the targets. I know they built some overhangs over the benches to stop it but I haven't shot there since.

I also live down that direction and I hardly notice the noise any more, I knew the range was there when I moved there so why would I ever complain about that? They do not allow FMJ at the range but I am sure some still comes through.

As far as the bullets going to the neighborhood it all starts with letting morons in there. The range officer is a retired sheriff and doesn't take any crap, probably throws a couple people out an hour. Most for rapid fire or something like that. Hell a few weeks ago I was sighting in my gun using some of the better targets so I could see the shots without a spotting scope. After 5 shots I saw 8 holes in the paper, looked over and some dumbass 4 lanes over was firing at mine because he could not see the holes in his. Guy is no longer allowed in the range. Overall they do an okay job but they need to add another range officer or install cameras to get better coverage. Sadly common sense is not so common any more and its only a matter of time before someone dies.

They need to put some serious thought into upgrades. I don't want to see them shutdown and agree with laws that protect ranges from noise complaints, rezoning, etc. However they need to keep bullets from leaving their property.

The latest article I found shows a picture that appears to be aprox .30 caliber FMJ bullet found inside a house. FMJ is not allowed on that rifle range.

I don't believe the story that a slug went through a roof and sheetrock...


For over 12 years I did thousands of insurance related roof inspections, and during that time dug quite a few (around 30) slugs of varying calibers out of roof tops and I NEVER saw even one slug come close to penetrating the decking. The closest I ever found was embedded about halfway through the decking. So if this was a ricochet it would have hit the roof at a low angle, thus increasing the risk of it simply deflecting.

If it went through a window, OK, but there is a really low chance of a slug penetrating a roof unless it is purposely fired right at it, which isn't possible in this particular case.

I heard there are tiny traffic lights above garland to keep the bullet traffic safe.
