Great southwest gun in i think grand prarrie damn near arlignton has gun rentals last time i was there they had rent 5 guns and get 10 rounds for each for 50 bucks they had a decent selection to try and its a indoor gun range dont got to worry about weather being sucky when you want to go shoot

My younger brother recently purchased his first hand gun, a Stoeger Cougar .45. We have sense put over 500 rounds of ammunition through the handgun without any issues.

Alan, I'd stay away from a 1911 as your first pistol. They can be a little maintenance intensive.

My RIA officer's size 1911 is no harder than any of the plastic pistols I've owned to take down. It shoots a hell of a lot better too.

go to cabelas and find several guns that fit your hand, then choose a caliber, then look up issues online (or ask in here) with the guns you narrowed it down to. do the research, I have wasted good money on guns I thought I would like. I personally like Glocks and Sigs and own both as well as S&W, Beretta, Ruger. But Glock is my pick for daily CCW.

I was looking around the 5-600 dollar range but obviously the lower the better. Are there any places I can go look that have used guns for sale? Will Bass Pro or Cabela's let me shoot one before I buy one from them?

You're kidding right? I have a Kahr and an HK and both are far easier to disassemble/reassemble than my 1911...

Not saying the 1911 is impossible, but its a little more finicky than pulling the slide, pushing out the release and taking off the slide.

My 1911 is pull the slide back, push the button, pull the pin and the slide comes off... then you pull the bushing (no tool needed, remember, compact), pull the spring and barrel slides out.

Compared to my other pistols... it's damn near the same. Actually I find it easier because I always have trouble getting the little lever to pop out on the XD and I can just push the "button" on the other side of the pin to pop it out.

Your best bet is to find someone with something you'd like to try (on this forum you'll have lots to choose from ) and then go based on that. I don't think you can pre-shoot stuff @ Cabelas (not that their prices are great). Maybe @ BP, but doubtful.

If you want to rent guns, you will have to do so at a shooting range/gun store. Bullet Trap, Shoot Smart, Great Southwest guns, etc.

If you are only going to own 1 hand gun make it a CZ75B. For what they cost nothing else even comes close. An older stainless S&W or Ruger service type revolver would also be a very good choice if you are on a tight budget.

The Bullet Trap in Plano has a wide selection of rental guns.

I shouldve added the caveat that the officers and commanders models are the exception; for the uninitiated the full size, government models can be somewhat daunting.
