It goes without saying that you should practice drawing and firing with any gun you are going to carry, so the manual safety should be a non-issue. Saying that the grip safety slows you down is laughable.

Exactly Don, my safety is my holster. If I have to pull that bitch out, someone is getting shot.

The only thing you have to do when you fire a 1911, is flip the safety off, hold the gun, and squeeze the trigger. If that concerns you, then leave the safety off and it's the same as your kahr.

Again, my comment was sarcastic and directed at situations that can arise in a shootout (and seem to do so with frequency, the '25% of gunshots being to the hands' portion). Specifically, if I am EVER unfortunate enough to be put into a situation where I have to draw on an armed attacker I realize I may very well get hit. I also have never owned or wanted to own a 1911, but it is because they just don't feel right in my hand and price, especially the Colts. Though I really do like the smaller 1911 type guns, like the STIs...

I realize it varies my make/model, but how much pressure does it actually take to depress the grip safety on a 1911? It would seem that if you can't depress it then you might not have enough grip strength to pull the trigger anyway. I've never noticed it taking much pressure on my Colts but I've never consciously thought about it.Last edited by Trick Pony; 07-25-2012, 01:14 PM.

I switch between a 1911 and LC9. If someone shooting me in the hand stops me from being able to defend myself, then they deserve the kill shot.
I had a Keltec that I decided to trade off for the LC9 because I wasn't comfortable having a gun with no external safety in the house with a toddler.
