Does anyone here hunt public lands like decatur? I've never been before and want to go this year (Bow and Rifle). Also do I need to take the hunter education course to use a bow?

Never hunted public. You'll have to take hunter ed just to get a license you can defer it the first year but it's required you have it to purchase the next.Originally posted by Danny46 View PostDoes anyone here hunt public lands like decatur? not 100% true.. you don't have to have the hunters ed completed to purchase a lic. but if you get busted you have to take the course and/or pay a fineOriginally posted by dee View PostNever hunted public. I've gotten the hunting license last 3 years without having the course, just havent used it. I am not adverse to taking the course at all, in fact I'd really like to take it as, once again, I've never been hunting. Would like to go soon though and not sure when the next class is. I think cabelas has one like the 18th of october. If there was an online option I'd probably do that.Originally posted by Sleeper View PostMost states are starting to offer it online. No more 8 hour classroom, but its really not bad. Just slate a day and get it done.
Public land can be a bitch, but sometimes youll find a spot that is rarely used. Until rifle season.

Awesome thanks for that link! May try and do the one in Flowermound tomorrow or the one in Allen on Sunday. May be a dumb question but whats the optimal way to get the animal out of the woods? Just throw it over your shoulder and carry it? I could probably handle that up to about a 100 pounds or so but that starts to get heavy quickOriginally posted by 2165 Turbo Rail View Post

Depends on your access. I'm not sure on public land
They make something that you can drag deer out with. Think of a rope with tarp on it that you wrap the deer in the tarp and drag it ( slides easier that way)
Or just wrap a rope around the horns or neck and drag it out to the closet place for a vehicle to get to it
If you are new to deer hunting you should also look into gutting a deer. There are basically two ways 1) field dressing which means gutting basically where it dropped. 2) hanging dressing. Which is where you hang the deer up back legs first is how we do it and gut the deer to where everything falls into a bucket below. We use about a 10gallon bucket
It's easy to do either way but if you don't have a basic idea it might seem scary. And you want to gut the deer soon after its dead because If you don't it will ruin the meat

Or if your lazy just cut the loins and backstraps off without gutting the deer or skinning it.
I gut mine in the field. I cut it open and break the pelvis in half and the cut the trakia and pull it all out. Don't have to worry about no but out or anything. It all comes out in a nice pile.

I'll be down on this land next weekend. My co worker sent be this today. He had intended on using his bow but it broke or something happened and he used his .44 mag pistol from 15-20 yards.
