So I was reading on the thread about selling a Colt 1911 to upgrade to one with a rail and I saw someone mention adding a Dawson rail to his existing 1911. I vaguely remember this as being an option and I've thought about buying another 1911 because my current Kimber does not have a light rail and I really want one on my "night stand" gun. Thoughts on the rail and maybe a link to a website that has more info? I'm at work right now and limited to what websites I can "surf".

I hope you are being sarcastic. I like to see what I'm shooting at night and there are certain situations where you may want that light mounted on the gun so that you have your other hand free. Like for example, pointing the gun at someone with the light on and using your other hand to dial 911 on your cell phone.Originally posted by FunFordCobra View PostYou don't need a light! Not sure if he is, but I have encountered people that are very serious about this argument. I'm just not sure what alternative I have. If it's dark in my house, I can do one of 3 things:Originally posted by Jose View PostI hope you are being sarcastic. -Turn on lights, which give my position away
-Carry a flashlight in my hand, meaning I have to fumble with 2 things and gives my position away
-Mount a light on my firearm, which gives my position away
The alternative is no light, which when living in a house with 2 adults, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and 3 cats, would not be the smartest thing, IMO.

Definitely no light is not an option. When I had a Glock 22 as my night stand gun I had an Insight light mounted on the gun and always carried a Surefire light in my pocket if I had to go outside and check something that went bump in the night. Miss that Glock, miss all my Glocks
But I'm not entirely unhappy with the three 1911's I have

Selling it is not an option for sentimental reasons. It was the first gun I ever bought my dad and the first 1911 I ever bought. I got it back from him when he no longer had the strength to rack the slide and I bought him a Taurus M85 for protection. After he past the way they are both mine and I'll never sell either.Originally posted by YOLO View PostYou should sell the Kimber, and buy one of these:

yes you can add a rail, you drill and tap two holes. The rails are stupid expensive if I remember, like $100 or something ridiculous."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin

What are the available options for adding a rail? Dawson doesn't appear to be available anymore. Anybody have the back story on that? I've seen a 3 or so manufacturers offering an addon light rail for the 1911 but the best (and probably most expensive) option I've found is the Surefire MR07 that replaces the slide release.Originally posted by CJ View Postyes you can add a rail, you drill and tap two holes. Never owned a Sig and if I'm going to buy a single stack full size .45 it will be a 1911. I wouldn't mind owning a 226, 228, or 229 in 9mm though (I think those models were all available in 9mm anyway) and probably with the DAK trigger. I really don't care for the SA/DA trigger and rather be DAO.Originally posted by YOLO View PostCool. You should still buy that Sig.

Take training on how to employ a weapon mounted light (or any light for that matter properly) and this is a non issue when you use it properly.Originally posted by FunFordCobra View PostYou don't need a light! It just screams, "Hey shoot at me right here!"
