AK gunsmith

Looking to add a side folding stock to an M92. I had contacted JBI Armory, but I'm still waiting for him to send me a quote. I called and ask about the quote and he said "today or tomorrow", that was a week ago. So now I'm here asking if y'all know of any other gunsmiths in the area that are extperts with AK's. Thanks.

That was my plan at the start. I bought the Stormwerz hinge, but felt it wasn't traditional and have since been looking for smith to add a side folder trunnion. I may still go that route just to satisfy my needs till I can get an actual stock added.

I would give Class 3 Machining a call. I know he is mainly setup for barrel threading, but has done some other work in the past.

I would keep an eye out for one of the Yugo underfolders if you are concerned with keeping it more traditional/correct.

I'm still willing to give Jim a shot at the build because he's the first smith I contacted and from what I've read he's one of the preferred AK builders (that I know of) in the metroplex area. I've had my stamp going on 5 or 6 months now and had told myself that I can wait a little bit more for a quote, but I'm also afraid I'd forget again and push the build aside. Right now I'm looking at other options appreciate it.

You're right, if I wanted to keep it factory original I would go with an underfolder, but just couldn't get used to the under fold stock so I decided an actual side fold trunnions would be better than the Stormwerz/Manticore set-up. Nothing wrong with S/M, just not what I was looking for with this build.

Appreciate David, but I can give him a little bit more time before I either go with another smith or a different set-up that I can install. I'll probably give him a call later this week or so, but I'm not removing your offer off the table either.

I wouldn't recommend class 3 machining. I used him for two barrel threadings and he took way longer than quoted, and did a pretty bad job on one of the guns. I won't ever use him again.

You would need to install an AKM rear trunion.

The last two I took him were done in less than 24 hours and turned out great.

What was the problem with the bad one?

He was quoting something like 2 to 3 days, it took almost 40 days to get mine back. I had a stainless ruger 10/22 threaded and had the sight moved back, and the soldering job (or welding or whatever the hell he did) looks like shit.

He also scratched the barrel pretty bad.

Are you prepared to get a new receiver, front trunion, and rear trunion? You can modify the front trunion by drilling and riveting in the catch paw, spring, and cutting the relief in the receiver for the pass through. I don't know if that can be done with the gun assembled though. I would just tear the receiver off and use a new one. That or just install a Beryl side folder (it's higher quality anyway).
