Railroad ties to hold your dirt together, some steel plate inside the ties, fill front with dirt. Don't shot over berm..

Yup very similar to what I had in mind except I wanted a front wall. Makes it easier to just staple the paper targets to. I would say 80-85% of the rounds that will be shot into mine will be 9mm, 40 and .22... Ocassionally my brother or a buddy might come over with their ar, and I am looking into getting a deer rifle next year, but otherwise that will pretty much be it.

Yes, but they wiggle to much to check accuracy. Although moving targets will make for good practice also..

Just build wooden frames to hold the targets in front of the berm.

Another thought, instead of steel, you could line the back with concrete and put the dirt in front. There's tons of places around you can get scrap concrete pieces. (construction on 75 comes to mind)..

I don't plan to use steel. Will probably just use rail road ties and sand like in the link above just on a smaller scale.

We used a Cat dozer and front end loader and made a large u-shaped dug out area. Stacked bags of quikrete around the sides of the wall area and then stacked bundled/baled car tires in front. Seems like it'll work out alright.
