So looking through my catalogs, Hornady offers a 2 die set for the .308 Win which has the size/deprime and the seat/roll crimp. But Dillon offers a 3 die set for .308 Win which has the size/deprime, seat, and then the taper crimp. Is there a certain advantage to using the taper crimp? I am shooting a Savage 111 so I figured a roll crimp would be fine. Does the taper crimp only become necessary if I am reloading 7.62 for an auto?

I don't taper crimp 308, but it would be a taper crimp for 308.
I taper crimp 45 ACP sometimes. I get smoother feeding. -

For bolt guns I sometimes don't crimp at all if I plan to single load them. I will also make the OAL a little long and make it where the lands push the bullet down into the case when closing the bolt. Don't try this with max loads.
For a semi auto like my M1A's or H&Ks you have to crimp the hell out of things. I don't believe that I have ever roll crimped a rifle cartridge; it has been a taper crimp for all of them as far as I know.Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.Comment
