  • 52 years later, and the humble MP5 is not showing its age. Sig is trying to be cute with the MPX abortion, CZ released the POS Scorpion Evo (which I bought and SBRed like a dumbass), and even H&K's own offerings cannot seem to replace it (fuck you, UMP).

It's still in demand (with the French ordering 35,000 units), it outsells the competition by orders of magnitude, it is used throughout the globe, former Eastern Bloc nations have adopted it, and the low recoil and accuracy offered are simply unparalleled.

          • It isn't much by comparison to some of the hardware in this thread but I've wanted a Colt Commander in .45 for as long as I can remember. While not a hard gun to find, I just never had the funds when one came up. Finally the stars have aligned.

              • I snagged a new TALO/Ruger lightweight commander. These come with Novaks out of the box, and they're crazy light. Naturally I had to throw a little custom work. I had a machinist friend do a Hi-Power cut and a Wilson-style roundbutt job, and I threw some Magpul grips at it, because I like them on a carry gun.

                Out of the box:

                Progress:

                Complete:

I like it a lot, and it shoots well. I'll rotate it around with my Colt LWC as a daily carry gun.

Beautiful looking gun Yale! Very tasteful mods. How much did the roundbutt job cost you and how do you like it? Did it make a significant different carrying it? And what's the Hi-Power cut?

                      • Thanks Jose. I'm w/ you on the questions to Yale. I've been looking for someone who can modify a CCW 1911 that I have.

Yale, if you're happy w/ your machinist, and he's open/legal to more work, please send me a PM w/ his contact information.

My smith is Shumaker Gunworks in Stephenville. He's the gunsmith attached to Star Arms, where I used to work. (254) 968-3852. The Hi-Power cut is the slight narrowing of the slide at the front. That has to be milled away. The roundbutt job requires a different mainspring housing, which he pins in place, then he scores the frame and files the point of the corner away. Wilson Combat makes the MSH, in either aluminum or steel. I chose aluminum since that's what my frame is. He priced the whole job, including recoating the gun in matte black gunkote at $225. I don't know if that was a buddy price, but I wouldn't expect it to be too far off that.

                            Oh damn that is tits!

Can you enlighten me on how to get ahold of something similar? I've drooled over a few Ruger's listed on their main webpage that were TALO but I am clueless how to get ahold of one, or wth TALO even is lol. I am seriously interested.

All of the Rugers have a four digit product code. The one for this one is 6708. Tell your favorite gun dealer to order Ruger #6708, or put that product code into slickguns.com. If you like government-length guns, they make one of those as well. If you don't care about the gun being a lightweight, get the regular stainless version and save money for the mods you want. You can always get it coated. After that, if you want custom work you have to go to a smith that gives you the warm fuzzies. I can't speak highly enough of mine. He used to smith for Thunder Ranch when they were in Fredericksburg.

EDIT: I almost forgot. TALO is a buying group of wholesalers servicing Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. They do some really cool shit.
