I have yet to handle a general purpose machine gun that I would consider lightweight or easy to transport.

    • Never said lightweight, but a 60, PKM, or even a 1919 are less discomforting to be mobile with than a 240.

Shooting it off your shoulder or from the hip, one should not have TRex arms.

It is a GPMG dude, it is ideally suited to be fired from a stationary position rather than the hip or from the shoulder-

        • Ode to the M60, the first and best general purpose machinegun.

            • The m60 has almost been completely replaced in the US armed forced by the m240. And the M60 was certainly not the first GPMG.

Ideally, but rarely if ever happens outside of permanent positions. We learned that after ww2 that taking from one man to carry a tripod for another is of poor logistics. That's why it's rare for any pic to be found of anyone post Korea humping a tripod for any GPMG

My experience which is nothing more than fucking around with one while walking through the woods and hunting pigs, it's awkward in carrying and length. Friend in service expressed the same.

I thought the M60 was the first time the phrase was coined, and then people applied that to previous machine guns. Do you have any evidence the term was applied pre-M60? Because to my knowledge, the M60 was the first machinegun to be called a GPMG.

Dunno man, I suppose that is possible but I have always heard pre-m60 firearms reffered to as GPMGs, notable the mg42 and 34.

I'm pretty sure the term is applied to them because of the M60 being designated the first general purpose machinegun.

I don't doubt it, but it filled no roles that other guns had not in the past.

I'm just defending the first general purpose machinegun statement.

                          • Generally before GPMG, the nomenclature was light or heavy machine gun.

                            • Only America would designate a machine designed to kill people as efficiently as possible as something so benign as "General Purpose."

I used "as" 4 times in the same sentence.

I give you the M240L weighing in at 22.2 pounds. This is what you will see more often on dismounts.

I shot the M240G a lot in the Marines and recently fired a M240L. When I pulled the L out of the Humvee the SGT could see the look on my face was a "what the fuck". "Yep, they have lightened it up since you were in". I could tell

Mounted the M240B is still used which weighs in at 27.6 pounds

Word is Barret has gotten the weight down below 20 with titanium and collapsing butt-stocks with the M240LW. And even made the gun more comfortable to over the shoulder carry when not in a combat role.

Now the Army in its infinite wisdom did give me a shooter for my uparmored Suburban and Excursion back in 2006 that was assigned a M240B. Yep, that is not gonna work, you need to turn that into the armory or borrow an M4 or at the least a SAW. Can you picture a Joe in full kit with a fucking M240 getting the front seat of a suburban that already has the door openings shortened by the armor? Just fucking silly.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.
