Getting a dog ... need some advice.

I also vote for adopting a rescue dog.

My German shepherd has the "velcro" tendencies. I call her my shadow, because while I'm home, she's usually within 10 feet. That's her comfort zone. I've never had any separation issues, I think a good amount of exercise helps. She also doesn't like meeting new people when I'm not around. Once I introduce her to them, she gives a little more leeway. She defends her perimeter, even against the neighbors, and has a helluva presence/bark.

She also howls like a wolf at emergency sirens. The neighbor kids always want to pet "the wolf" lol.

Yup... I back porch always had hair on the edge of the porch and shit. The mother fucker was a beast though. If a cat,bird,possum,squirrel found its way into our backyard it was game over.

my dog doesn't shed anywhere NEAR what a wolf-esque dog does! I couldn't imagine owning an Akita, Husky, etc. without a Furminator!!

There is a lot of bad breeding out there with labs and retrievers as well. My sis' lab is in the animal ER every other week from being too big for her skeletal and muscular systems to handle. And she's not even big. Her structure is just so brittle.

any highly popular breed is susceptible to overbreeding/inferior breeding... puppy mill type shit

I have heard that a Catahoula is very loyal, protective and not as agressive as a pit but every bit as effective for protection.

They are some hard headed fucking dogs though. My buddy had one that they had to have put to sleep, and replaced him with another. They were/are both hard headed, stubborn bastards !

Great dogs though, both of them. When I go over to their house and knock on the door, if they're not expecting me, she will be barking her ass off....and she has a "big dog" bark. The kind that says, "Hey mother fucker, I will eat your insides if you come in here !". But as soon as the door is opened and she sees me, she turns into a licking machine and is as sweet as can be.

I'm not a big fan of labs in general... They and retrievers can be very aggressive!!! They are working dogs, afterall. I have met many that are just plain sweet and gentle, but I've met a bunch that can get aggressive/dominant QUICK!

plus they fucking drool/slobber... nothing like a bull dog/mastif type, but I can't fucking stand dogs that drool

Get a Boxer. I have one and they really are the best dog to have. She is so sweet to anyone that comes around her. Potty training is hell so you MUST be patient and give it time.
