How thin is the metal? If it is like 16 guage, which alot of car panels are in that range, A series of tacks is a good way to go to keep the heat down. What settings is your machine at and what wire are you using? And you definetaly want to stay away from fluxcore, that stuff likes to run hot.

I doubt its 16ga...thats thick. Hell, even old cars are in the 18ga range. Im guessing that newer cars are in the 20-22ga range.
