I do that with numbers all the time, I memorize numbers without ever trying... for example my social security number, bank account number, Drivers License number, Debit card number, etc... all memorized but I never intentionally sat down to memorize them, just after using the numbers a few times it gets stuck in my head.

I have all my personal #'s memorized, cc, ssn, etc. Plus every phone # and even some people's old phone #'s and old addresses, along with all my customers phone #'s and addresses here at work. Probably thousands of part #'s from work and even some still from my old job.

I don't try and remember #'s they just get stuck in my head, sometimes I'll have a # stuck in my head and just repeat it over and over like when you have a song stuck in your head. Lol

However I have needed envelopes for about 3 weeks but haven't been able to remember that in the last 4 times I've been to the store.

We all have quirks.

I can read backwards faster than the average person can read forward. In the right mood, you can rattle off words and I can say them backwards immediately, without seeing them written.

I type VERY quickly using only 3 fingers (left index plus right middle and index). I know where the keys are, so it's not a hunt and peck thing. If I had to use more fingers, I wouldn't be able to type.

At work, I keep very detailed notes for every conversation I have with my clients. But for the most part, if I am away from my desk and you ask me anything about any of them, I wouldn't have the slightest clue. It's like I know that I have the info stored electronically, so I do not allow my brain to create the wrinkle. In meetings, all of my coworkers bring up names and know the situation behind them. I don't contribute much unless I wrote it down before I went in there.

I make lists for everything. For example, when I go on my annual camping trip to Colorado, I make a list of what I need in the vehicle for the actual road trip, a list of food and groceries, a list of camping/fishing gear, a list of clothes, a first aid list, a toiletry list, a list of electronic items (ipod, camera, etc), a list of activites, and so on. It gets worse - I also make a list of all of the lists. It's the only way I can keep anything straight.

As we age we have a more difficult time with short term memory..mainly due to excess background noise competing for the same space. You really have to focus on the task as hand to remember it.
There is a study from a few years back that shows that giving patients without dementia Aricept greatly improves cognitive function. I dont use it but if I notice some decline in cognitive function I may.
Another reason we have memory troubles is because we are not exercising our brains like we did when we were younger and in school.

I count syllables in sentences sometimes...for no apparent or useful reason.

I do this with words/syllables/number of steps/whatever the fuck. They have to be in multiples of three, and an even number multiples of three at that! I think it all comes back to the fact that my favorite time signature in music is 3/4 time. I remember numbers easily, too.
