When my other roommate took the filter out, you could not see the sun through it when holding it up.

Coil is dirty then. Looking at $3-500 to have someone evac, R&I the coil, wash at car wash, then recharge.

The filter was just replaced, the warranty program they have says it covers AC, but i'm unsure what part.

I really doubt there has been any maintenance done.

Did it freeze up after changing the filter? Sounds like it will need a coil clean if it has. Carefull on home warranty companies... they're contractors are notorious for charging stupid money over and above what the warranty will pay.

It has froze over before, we turned off the AC for 8 hours or so and it worked afterwards.

This time the AC stopped working, then my buddy changed the filter, and it's been off for over 24 hours now and still no cold air. To answer, it froze before the filter change.
