Because your regular GPS units don't send any information. They only receieve. There is no way to track one. All they can do is sit and wait until someone tries to update the maps, which requires the unit to be connected to a PC. Garmins app uses the serial # to verify the model # to ensure the correct map pack is sent. That serial # is also checked against the database to make sure it is a good serial. When you report it stolen, it flags it in their system. So it wont let them update, and will alert Garmin of the attempt. Garmin can then turn over any information, IP address, payment method, etc to the authorities.Originally posted by Grimpala View PostWhy couldn't garmin use this info to find the truck and or unit?

Having a vehicle stolen hits you in a very unique way. You feel violated, and in disbelief. Sucks. My pride & joy '91 GT was stolen back in the day... The cock sucker sat out there and reved the engine in the middle of the road. Waited for me to come out the front door, then dumped the clutch as if saying "F*CK YOU!!!"
I'll never forget the image of seeing my car hauling ass down my street with some stranger at the wheel.
I hope they find your truck man. You never know...

Sorry to hear that Jeff, that's a really nice truck. I'm surprised Plano PD didn't have their skywatch mobile unit out there. It's almost always there with a cop in it while another cop watches the lot.Originally posted by JesterEvery time you see the fucking guy....show him your fucking dick.. Just whip out your hawg and wiggle it in his direction, put it away, call him a fuckin meatgazer, shoot him the bird and go inside.

Yep. Found the car 4 days later burnt to shit. They took my personal stuff, V1, alpine, hood, seats, etc, doused it in gas, and set it on fire. THey couldnt get the cobra rims off due to the locks. All the lugs were missing except the locks. That fuckin car had 40,xxx ORIGINAL miles on it. It was IMMACULATE. I'm not bragging one bit, this fuggin car turned alot of heads and got me more snatch than I could shake my own stick at... And they set it on fire after stealing maybe a grand worth of shit.Originally posted by Osiris View PostHoly shit. The fucker taunted you?
And get this, it was stolen 5 minutes after I was getting the first peice of ass from my gf at the time. Heard it start up, threw some shorts on, and ran out front to see him burn out in front of the house and he was gone.

Sorry for your loss OP. This is the reason why I can't see myself owning a nice Chevy truck. As much as I like them, this scenario is always in the back of my head.
Did you have a GPS alarm/low jack or something similar on it? It seems like a must have on these trucks especially one as nice as yours was...

Mgmt @ Cinemark said they do not have cameras.Originally posted by danielhv View PostJeff, did you check with the theater to see if they have video of the parking lot? Maybe you can see someone or a car dropping someone off by ur truck?
Lesson learned - PUSH YOUR ONSTAR BUTTON - if at any point in ownership the button had been pushed, they could locate it. The previous owner had it disconnected and even with out having an OnStar account, had I pushed the button just one time and talked to them - it would have had it reactivated and they would have been able to locate it.Originally posted by A_A_G View PostSorry for your loss OP. If I had ever activated the OnStar - it would have located it. Lady on the phone was ready and willing but the previous owner disconnected it, and I never pressed the blue button. That's the first thing i'll do before I leave the dealer next time.Originally posted by mikeb View PostThat sucks Jeff. I agree with having a GPS tracker or Lojack on any nice car nowadays - that at least gives you a fighting chance to get it back.I build websites. PM me.
