Here is what a new A/C unit can do for you.

Last year, my consumption during this billing time was 2092 KWH (86 deg. average temp) with an old, inefficient A/C unit. It crapped out in March, so we got a new, super high efficiency (second from the highest) unit, both inside and outside units changed.

This year, my consumption was 1832 KWH (93 degree average temp) for the same billing period. We leave the temp at 76 deg. at night, turning it to 77 deg. during the day. House is 31 years old, 2150 sq. ft., original windows/insulation. We are home all day/night, aka old (retired) farts. My TXU is up for renewal in Dec., so will be shopping around for a better rate.

New unit cycled on and off, albeit the duty cycle (OFF/ON) was 10/90% during the 105-110 days, but the old unit never did turn off until after 10 PM, and the temp last year was considerably lower on the average.

We have a 5 ton unit trying to cool the space -- it just can't do it in this high heat, especially when it's still 100 degrees at 10:30 pm. When the unit was down (new evaporator and fixed a few coolant leaks), it got up to 94 degrees upstairs. The boys moved downstairs into the guest room then. I took the old box fan I use in the garage and put it in the room. It was loud as crap, but they loved it. I just laughed as that's how I grew up sleeping in the summers.

2718 kwh used which is up from about 1600 kwh for last July. That's for 3100sqft-ish and the downstairs unit going out so the upstairs was cranking away for three days.
