I still have no real clear cut way on how to handle this. I made Peyton sit in his room right now with no X-Box. But he is pretty upset about the dog passing & my heart hurts for the kid, But at the same time this isnt the first time this has happened. But I sure want to make it the last.

But im not here every day. Again I just see his mom & come around a couple days of the week cause, I run my business out of Rockwal & Garland & im not in Peytons life everyday & I feel weird on scolding him with the him already being heart broke & me being the closet thing to his father in his life.

My thoughts so far are to. Make him dig the hole & put the dog in the hole with his who hands & make him sweat while I supervise it. I think he needs to do this himself. At 11 years old I think he needs to take Responsibility for it. He is going to be a man one day and is the man of the house with him being the only male who lives there full time.

Keep in mind guys. Peyton really is a good kid. I mean he does all the man chores IE Mowing, Garbage, Killing Scorpions for his mom & sister, Brings in the Grocerys & pumps the gas for his mom. He makes straight A's in a school that was 3rd on the nations list of best Taks Test Scores at Scurry.

I was responsible for shooting plenty of wild game way before age 11 :P and by that age I had seen some of my dogs come and go. It's hard but I wasn't ever scarred for life because of it and it taught me lessons in life.


FWIW, I work my dogs in this heat..... 110+ temps. What kind of dog was this? I'll work my dogs with kevlar on them if needed even. None of them have ever passed out from the heat or just killed over. You just have to provide them with a steady source for water.

Well my daughters stepbrother Peyton is 9 years old & its his job to take care of their dog (JASPER), Yesterday I noticed he was at the door barking & barking. I told Peyton, Make sure to go out there & give that dog water in this heat & go check on him every couple hours. I brought my dog Buttkiss inside cause its hot. I told their mother that they should think about bringing him in and keeping him in his cage during the hot part of the day.

Why didnt the ADULT do the right thing and bring the dog inside.

But his body stunk pretty bad & was stiff. I found him at 7 this morning & cant imagine him stinking that bad in a 12 hour window. I dont think Peyton is telling the truth completely.

In that heat and humidity? Easily.
You should be more pissed at yourself than to take it out on this kid. Kids that age really don't have the attention span to hold that kind of responsibility. Clean their room, brush their teeth, wash their nasty parts? Sure. To have the ability to make life and death decisions? Not a chance.

The real tragedy here is this board's reading comprehension.

In his original thread he said he asked the kid to make sure the dog had water every couple of hours because it was hot. He also said he told the mother they should think about bringing the dog inside. Then he obviously left, I'm sure if he was there, things might have happened differently.

He also said it appeared the dog wasn't given water while he was gone for the day.

I don't think I'd let the kid take the BLAME for the death of the dog, but he should understand that things like living creatures can require more attention during times of extreme heat and cold.

Seb, while ELVIS may be a real scumbag 99% of the time, he's a standup dad in my opinion. I'd definitely take his advice when it comes to how to handle this situation from a father/son standpoint.

Moms like Juggz are a little more sympathetic in these situations, and often their views of protection of their baby's feelings tend to overshadow the harder learning lessons of life. Women tend to want to nurture and protect their children from pain, and that's a good thing too. No offense to her or any other single mother's in this thread, as I was raised the majority of the time by one.

My mom and dad both had different views when it came to things like this, but in the end I value the hard knock lessons my dad instilled in me a bit more when it comes to these lessons. I also value the compassion, love, understanding, and nurturing my mother would give me after I had to bury a dog in a situation like this.

ok so you and this kids mom aren’t even together anymore. damn dude. you’re a stand up guy in my book I’m kind of in the same situation as you with a kid. but idk if you should do anything about it. sounds like the mom is a lazy ass and shouldn’t be allowed to have pets then end.

This is one of the reasons why Im asking how to handle this. Im not his real father or even a active full time step father. But I know im the closet thing to a father he has & with him already hurting over the dog & in tears, It really hurts me to see him hurt when I really think he just made a bad mistake & forgot about Jasper. Either way. Their is a lesson that needs to be learned here from this mistake & I want to teach him that lesson without overstepping my bounds with me & his mother not being together anymore & just seeing each other a couple days a week.
