If you're over 30, the job isn't worth a shit. You won't get the full retirement package until you have 30yrs in and you sure as hell won't be able to do half of the job when you 55+. The pay can be ok when starting and then you'll do fine in about 5yrs (as with almost everything in the railroad).

Without knowing much of your situation, I can only imagine you'll be chasing your job to get on the lowest seniority gangs on the system. Don't plan on having much of a family life.

FreightTrain could probably give you more insight on the UP side. I was a Trainmaster for BNSF and spent a few months traveling with the RP gangs in central Texas. Not a fun life unless you enjoy living in shitty motels for four months at a time and waking up at 3am to stand around for 3hrs and maybe get 2 miles of work done.

So yea, honest opinion. If you have other job offers, weigh the pros/cons. If you don't have other job options at the moment, I would take the UP gig because the rails don't exactly hire all that often. Typically in 30yr surges.
