I don't remember the part of his speech where he said "I have a dream that one day my birthday will be used to get 35-45% off all washers and dryers over 399.95, with free next day delivery!"

Not weird at all. Sears holdings are in the tank right now. They are probably going to exploit any opportunity(holiday) to run sales promotions to attract customers.
