Children with autism. Just sayin'.Originally posted by motoman View PostWe're definitely seeking answers as epilepsy doesn't run in my family. The first time epilepsy appeared in our family from the past 3 generations was with my nephew who's autistic. From what I understand, epilepsy appears more with autistic children.

For whatever reason, the earliest his neurosurgeon could get a MRI scheduled was sometime in May. I have no clue why he's having to wait so long, but he is going in for an EEG with this new doctor next week.Originally posted by quikag View PostWill say a prayer for your brother. He needs a brain MRI quick to see what's going on. Anti-seizure med (Keppra? There is something wrong with the MRI issue. What kind of insurance does your brother have? You can get an MRI within a day or two if needed. Same day, if it's an emergency.Originally posted by motoman View PostFor whatever reason, the earliest his neurosurgeon could get a MRI scheduled was sometime in May. My wife has a brain tumor and we work with UT Southwestern and Baylor. I'd HIGHLY recommend talking to Dr. Christopher Madden at UTSW or Dr. David Barnett (chief of neurosurgery at Baylor-Dallas). If your neurosurgeon can't get an MRI scheduled until May, you need to find another neurosurgeon. That is not right OR I don't have all the facts.Ford

I misunderstood what he was saying, he hasn't seen the neurosurgeon yet, he's got a new neurologist he just went to and really likes. His neurologist is at UTSW (Dr. Modur) and there is a radiologist at parkland who is also on the neurology team at UTSW. His neurologist wanted him to go there so that radiologist could read the MRI, but parkland is busier than other places. He's trying to get one scheduled sooner.Originally posted by quikag View PostThere is something wrong with the MRI issue. What kind of insurance does your brother have? Yeah, an MRI can be scheduled within the week and I would hope the neurologist would see the benefit of possibly having another radiologist read the MRI to get your brother in two months sooner! I would use the Zale-Lipshy radiology department for the MRI if possible. Good luck!Ford

I'm chatting my brother online as I've been replying to this thread and he said Dr. Barnett did the surgery for a close friend of ours. He may be looking into getting an appointment with him.Originally posted by quikag View PostYeah, an MRI can be scheduled within the week and I would hope the neurologist would see the benefit of possibly having another radiologist read the MRI to get your brother in two months sooner! FYI...Lyrica isnt routinely used as an antiseizure medication as it doesnt work well. For the most part, it is used for neuropathic pain.Originally posted by quikag View PostWill say a prayer for your brother. He needs a brain MRI quick to see what's going on. And nothing can fix the problem if the person has epileptic seizures. So, the medications are the best we have. For the most part, they decrease the excitability of neurons in the brain.
And an MRI will just show if there is a structural problem with his brain. It could be perfectly normal and the patient still have seizures. The EEG will measure brain wave patterns and a neurologist will be able to tell if there are epileptiform waves.
I assume the ER doc ruled out there other causes of seizures that are life threatening...
Hope you guys get it figured out Greg.

His first seizure was back in Dec, at that his neurologist did a CT scan and an EEG, which they both came back negative for anything that could cause seizures. After the first one he was put on Ativan for 3 weeks and after the scans came back negative, the doctor told him he could come off of it.Originally posted by davbrucas View PostFYI...Lyrica isnt routinely used as an antiseizure medication as it doesnt work well. Since his first seizure, he's found a new neurologist (Dr. Modur from UTSW) and has had 3 more seizures, 2 of which happened while he was sleeping. The seizure he had on friday was a grand mal seizure which lasted 4 minutes. Dr. Modur prescribed Keppra for him for the time being. He'll go in for a longer EEG either this week or next week and he's training to get an MRI scheduled for an earlier time.
Dave, how possible is it for someone to have all their test results to come back negative but still be having seizures?Originally posted by JesterEvery time you see the fucking guy....show him your fucking dick..
