I'm pretty sure that you can't root an OG Evo w/SOC.

What version of HBoot does your Evo have shumpert? Menu, settings, applications, development, uncheck Fast Boot. Power down, press Vol Down+ Power, on the white screen look at the top and write down which version of HBoot it has and post back. I'll reply w/directions to root, s-off and flash CWM Recovery.

Can I run Ice Cream Sandwitch?

I have an iPhone 4s as my work phone and I like it, I just figured I'd get an android to check them out.
Rooting just changes permissions and lets you do more with the phone.
    No.
    Yes.

My Android HTC EVO has worked just fine for the year that I have owned it. The battery does run down faster than I'd like it to but I was used to only charging my phone twice per week. Now I charge it every night. I will probably root it in the near future based on all the input that has been posted on this website regarding it. I've just been a little leary of doing so, I just want it to work without having to tinker with it everyday.

Didn't work for me either, but I was told it wouldn't work with the first gens (I got mine the week it came out). I don't know if it's true or not, but that's what I've heard.

Hello everyone: I've used quite a few of the ROMs on here, so I thought I'd give back what I can. Because CM has quit putting out nightlies for us, I used lithid's CMCompiler to build the latest CM7 ROM for our Evos. Some caveats to these...

Dl either of these, move to root of sd, reboot into recovery, Backup/Restore>backup>wipe cache>wipe dalvik>install from sd>choose zip>install

This is a newer build than what you're using and should have the SS feature. If not, lemme know and I'll find an apk for ShootMe or the like.
