The KMD and the communist forces had a "truce" going during WWII , a mutual pact to fight the japanese. We also gave some supplies to the communist forces, but there was a LOT of worries about giving arms and armament to them, and Chang Kai-Shek was very critical of any weapons shipments to the communists.
Honestly, it wasnt until after the war, and after the failure of George C Marshalls negotiations (which were terrible) that the communists turned against the US. Hell, Mao wanted to use a strong relationship with the US to help reduce soviet influence on china.
At the time, we still thought communism throughout the world was all soviet controlled, and everyone was in lock-step with Moscow. Shit, the chinese fired more bullets at the russians than we ever did.Comment

I've heard stories that at Iwo Jima they just buried a lot of shit in a huge pit instead of trying to do anything with it after the war. No telling how many B29's and other planes/equipment got left on that island.Comment
