For "us" - meaning, anyone over 25 years old - driving meant a way to get away from your parents and going out to socialize.
Kids do that today in their bedrooms, with cell phones, video games, and facebook. Why would they want to drive across town to see someone when they can just see if they're online (they probably are) and BS with them that way? Other than that, cars are an annoyingly slow way to get Taco Bell or a pizza.
It's fucking weird, man. I've started calling this group of people Gen U (Useless) because they are the most know-nothing, do-nothing, be-nothing, worthless sacks of shit imaginable.

As a matter of fact, one of them lived with us in Forney for a while and thought it would be an awesome idea to work in Addison.(that is about 30 miles away) He came up with an idea to ride his bike to the local dart station......12 miles away and then he would take the bus to Addison from there.
I almost slapped him upside the head for that dumbass idea.

I think I will charge my children to use wifi or Internet connection. Seems like they have no reason to do anything if they don't have to pay for it.
Let's say room has to be clean to use the Internet or cell phone at home.

This is a good reason to be iffy on getting into a car. I've thought numerous times if gas prices were what they are now when I was a kid, I'd have to work 2-4 hours just to pay for the gas. Which part time jobs for HS kids and such, they'd end up just working to pay to work.the high cost of owning, fueling and maintaining a car
Yeah - like a lot of y'all - I worked 3-4 part time jobs during the summer and sometimes 2 during school. However, a lot of parents would rather their kids work just 1 part time job....meh, I'm babbling.
Either way I'm not sure any of that really matters. Kids HAVE to drive at a certain point if they ever want to grow up. Without driving so many great things in life will be missed.

my stepson turns 17 in a few days and has barely even started to get his permit.
i think he's asked to practice driving, which i'm more than willing to do, maybe 3 times the last year.
it just doesnt seem to be much of a priority. however i want him to get a job and ill be damned if i drop him off/pick him up from his own work.

my daily is a manual. at times in traffic i wish i had an auto, but in the end i am glad i got a manual over auto. how am i supposed to bump start an auto?!?Originally posted by red95gts View PostI've already decided that all of my kids will be proficient at driving a manual trans before they get a license. Seeing as there are hardly any cars left with manual transmissions, I'm afraid it's a dying art but it's one they get to learn whether they want to or not. The only way to "Save the Manuals" (as Car & Driver puts it) is to teach people how to drive one and hope they enjoy it.
My Dad not only made me learn on a manual trans, he made me take my driver's test in it as well. My mom had a Camry with an auto at the time, but I wasn't allowed to use it for the test. At the time I thought it was stupid, but I thank him for it now...

You have got to be careful with that. One thing that keeps me from screaming at others anymore is knowing the very fact that, even though they are in the wrong and shit gets escalated, what are witnesses going to say? They are going to say "some crazed lunatic got out of his car yelling at this poor innocent who was doing nothing wrong..." and you're the one who's going to be punished.

This shit is really starting to get on my nerves. The last three or four days have been worse than normal, and my previously low level of road rage (saved for only the most drastic of retards on the road) is rising to never-before-witnessed levels.Originally posted by SS Junk View PostGood. I could see it if you lived in an urban section of a big metropolitan area. When I travel to Boston for work, I don't even bother renting a car since driving in Boston proper is such a clusterfuck. I just take the subway everywhere I need to go. However, aside from Boston, NYC, Chicago, SF, and LA I can't think of any other US cities where public transportation is well-developed enough to allow you to not drive at all.
It's scary to think about the laziness of the generation behind us. If they are too lazy to go get a driver's license, I suppose showing up for work and putting in 100% effort is completely out of the question.
I will say my 14 y/o daughter talks about driving all the time and how she wants a Rustang for her first car. She's even stashing away some of her babysitting $$ to pay for it... Maybe it skips a generation?

I'm about to be 22, and could NOT imagine not wanting to drive on my own as soon as I could've. I grew up in a pretty big city before moving to Texas, and still could not fathom not wanting to drive. It's the first step to being out on your own.
