If youre wanting to do river/camping you can head to the Brazos below the Hwy 16 bridge (just below possum kingdom dam) and paddle down about a mile and pick a spot, then paddle back up the next day. Make sure and check the water release before you go.

I also recommend a spot in Oklahoma: The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. They have a wilderness area called Charon's Gardens, and they only allow like 10 people to camp there overnight. It's awesome. There are buffalo, Elk, and a very old strain of Longhorn. I have been going there since I was a little kid, and it's never lost its magic to me.

I don't have any kind of boat/canoe/kayak, and I'm looking for a place I can park near and use my truck tent this trip. I plan on getting some lighter gear and doing some kind of river camping/canoe trip on the Brazos in late winter/early spring, though. I've heard it's a lot of fun.

If you don't find something secluded and decide to go with a State park give Purtis Creek State Park a shot, awesome fishing and nice park. I think the have remote spots, but I'm pretty sure they are hike in.

Actually, this brings up an idea. Aren't there 4x4 "parks" within a couple of hours from DFW that allow overnight stays? I would love to do some not-too-crazy off-roading at the same time. My F250 does pretty good on moderate trails as long as it'll fit. Do these places offer camping, and can I get pretty far away from the traffic? I wouldn't want dirt bikes flying by every 5 minutes, but if I can get tucked away in a nice spot, maybe backed up to some kind of water...

Seems like I have heard about a place like that, but maybe I'm dreaming.

It is closer to DFW than Tyler, Southeast of Dallas off of 175 down towards Cedar Creek. I think it is about 20 miles south of Canton.

It is also nice that the entire lake is within the state park so no need for fishing license even if you take boat.

I always enjoyed Caddo Lake because of the eeriness and odd beauty of the cypress trees. Robert would be a better guide. We did most of our camping at Atlanta State Park and up in Lake Ouachita growing up, so I'm not as well versed in my local parks.
