It's a business that's tough to get started in, and if you aren't decent with managing money - You'll get behind and end up like this guy appears to have done.
A lot of smaller places that I've know of in the past would take money on a job, spend the money and not have money to order parts when the time came - then turn around and ask for more money, only to repeat the process. Next car comes in, use that money to finish the previous car - rinse and repeat.
I'm paranoid about money, and I'm way to easy to find to be doing shit like that. I can't imagine someone could do that stuff and have a clear concience.

I worked for someone in the past that ran the business like that. Now I can spot it fairly quickly. One easy way to avoid it is to not take in more money on a job than you actually need. I've had jobs in the past that I footed the entire build ($25k) until it was completely finished and delivered. It's stressful but it does work. I also don't spend much money at all in my personal life. I don't have a hobby to drain my income or money from my business.Originally posted by turbostang View PostIt's a business that's tough to get started in, and if you aren't decent with managing money - You'll get behind and end up like this guy appears to have done.

I'd like to think this has been haunting the guy at least since he dissolved the company in September, but if the "robbery" was an inside job I doubt it.Originally posted by turbostang View PostIt's a business that's tough to get started in, and if you aren't decent with managing money - You'll get behind and end up like this guy appears to have done.

As for your shop Brooks, I have no doubt you'll be an honest business man and one of the VERY few shops I'd feel good spending money with (after I attempt to Jew you down multiple times).
It's just hard for me to fathom how these people spent so much money, sight unseen, never having met this guy, never being at his shop, and most never even received invoices, and almost all of them are past the deadline for disputing charges.
I've gotten burned before, but I'd like to think it couldn't happen like this to me.

I've had MANY people try to pay in full up front, mainly because they'll spend their money before they get it to me - but I simply don't take any more than what's needed to cover the materials.Originally posted by Sam88gta1 View PostI worked for someone in the past that ran the business like that. See, I'm prepared - I have a hidden james-the-jew price that's automatically added based on who's name is on the invoice.

That's fine, just don't send me any more freakishly serious text messages at 9am in the morning. And now that I know about the "james-the-jew" multiplier you can expect some serious jew action.Originally posted by turbostang View PostThanks!
