From what I can gather, the whole reason he's turned to god is because he's too big of a bitch to pull up his bootstraps and face the problems that he's made for himself and subsequently relieve himself of any responsibility for his past, present and future actions. Hence the "I'm a sinner and only god can judge me" which conveniently translates into intelligent language as "I want to do anything I want to with no repercussions for my actions."

What a great way to base one's moral compass.
