I use to do a simple google, bing etc search for paint contractors in my area and we were always 1st on top. Suddenly we are off the page. What can I do to get us back on top for the search.

One of the biggest drivers of organic search results is new content. If you haven't updated your site in a while, it's easy to get bumped down by new sites or sites that update/add content on a regular basis.

SEO your site once a week and add new content.

Make sure you have proper content type and correct meta tags for your site too.

If you have images, use alts and titles for the service as bots cannot see images.

Advertise on a Facebook page with links to the site.

I wish I knew how to do this. I'm plain ignorant to web design.

                Go to Google.com/Places
                • Address is in the format you normally use (ie 123 Street Rd #34 vs 123 Street Road Suite #34)
                • Your Google Plus profile should be associated with the listing (Check your Plus account, "add" it from your account, when adding the business your business should be auto suggested)
                • Email address on Google Places is xxx@yourdomain.com
                • Website url is to your main page
                • High quality description. Don't stuff a bunch of keywords here, write for humans
                • Categories: What categories do your competitors use? Which are most accurate for your business?
                • Specify your service area (Radius)
                • Specify hours of operation.
                • MAKE SURE you have 10 images, and at LEAST one video
                • Additional Details: What do successful listing in your industry, but in other states, place here?

                Google Plus:
On your (personal) profile, use a photo of yourself. Get as MANY CONNECTIONS as possible. Post content, interact.

On your business page, concentrate on it like you would Facebook or Twitter.
                • Ensure your business is well listed on Yellow Page websites. Use original photos and descriptions on these sites. Use a standardized address format across all yellow page sites
                • Yelp, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Angies List, etc. Do the best you can to create as much content you can associated with your business
                • Find local websites that will create a link to your website
                • Mention your business name and address as OFTEN as possible. Google Places doesn't rely on "links" so much as "citations". Here is an example citation:

                  My Business
                  123 Some Rd. #34
                  The Colony, Tx 75056

                  or

Forum post 1: "I went to My Business and had tacos for lunch. The tacos WERE AWESOME. I plan to go back to The Colony tomorrow for more My Business Tacos."

Forum Post 2: "They have badass catering. You have to call for catering: 555-555-5555."
                • Do everything you do FOR HUMANS. 90% of recommendations you will find will hurt your business. Don't submit to a thousand directories, don't post spam links on every blog you can find. Use your head, act like a potential customer would if they mentioned you online, which wouldn't be on WorldsBestDirectoryEver.com
                • The best citations come from news stories, popular local blogs, Mentions on your local Chamber of Commerce site, and so one.
                • Reviews. Get a lot of them. It's easier to get reviews now on Google Plus than the old Google Places listings (and easier to direct people there). Don't have your friends and family spam you with reviews, have real customers do so. Also helps to have the save you as a marker on a map. I would be vary wary of having family members review your business (Bob Smith, John Smith, Sue Smith) or anyone closely connected.
                • DO NOT create fake Google content from your desktop/laptop. Don't go create fake accounts and leave reviews. Don't create fake foursquare accounts and leave reviews. If you do, use a laptop at a coffee shop, write down your aliases, and clear everything after your done (using linux would make that easier). If you create fake reviews or any content on major websites, make a good fake account to go along with it. IE any accounts I use to leave fake reviews are used frequently and I don't come out swinging leaving reviews only for businesses I'm associated with.. Their long term assets.

There's a billion other things you can do, just rattling crap off at 2am.

                  More Stuff:

Remove any "keywords" meta tags. Write high quality page titles, search around and learn how to write title tags that CONVERT. High rankings are USELESS if your title tags don't convert in search results. Also, write description meta tags that are useful to visitors. If you write these for search engines, customers will see them and think your from India or don't speak proper english.

Put your business address, at least on your contact page/locations page, in a microformat.

I wrote a lot about Google Places, it's important to have good information there, but everything is changing over to Plus. For now, you still need to work Google Places as well.

Create a community on Google Plus associated with your business..
