I backpacked the western coast of the big island (Sigatoka to Momi to Nadi then to Lautoka). The resort areas are just like any other island resort. If you want some culture, hit the paths. Stay out of Suva. It blows. Get with some locals and drink some grog.

We also stayed at a hotel in Nadi by the airport, about 3 blocks from the beach for $8 a night with an awesome breakfast.
