Massive explosion in West, TX

Damn that is terrible news. Was his brother in law a firefighter, plant worker, or did he live nearby? It seems the plants are evacuated. At least, that's what it seems like - most of the people unaccounted for are the firefighters and nearby residents.

Damn. One of our outside salesmen lost his brother in law, and several family members are hurt/had all the windows blown out of their homes and the homes are in really bad shape.

Heard the explosions. Just thought it was thunder coming. I didn't even hear about it until my drive to work after I turned on the radio.

My "sources" say stick with Carter and do not donate to Red Cross, because it won't stay local.

That is why I never donate to the Red Cross, we have a Texas/Oklahoma blood donation place that keeps the blood in the general area.

I was 3 years old and lived in Texas City in 1947. My older brother was at a pre-school within a few miles of the plant where the explosion occurred. He had cuts from flying glass but fortunately got out OK. My mother and myself had gone grocery shopping at a store across from our house. When we came outside to see what had happened, we saw a huge cloud of smoke similar to the West pic but much larger. We went back to our house before we went to get my brother. Our living room was covered with glass from the blown out windows. The glass was stuck in the walls, furniture, etc. Had we been in the house when the blast(s) occurred, we would have no doubt suffered many cuts.

We went to get my brother and on to the hospital. I still remember waiting in long lines to get treated. Everyone was in similar shape, no triage, etc. Just a lot of bloody men and women standing in line waiting to see the few doctors there. Texas City was a small town, only a few 1000 lived there then, so emergency facilities were few.

I have a lot of stories I remember, as my father, grandfather and uncle worked at the big Standard Oil refinery, which was just a few miles away from the main blast site. Because all of the chemical and oil refineries were so close together, all of the facilities went up in smoke from the shrapnel caused by the initial and later blasts. Fires all night long. Sirens 24/7.

I guess I am glad I have forgotten most of the experience, but a few scenes I witnessed are still burned in my memory and are still there after 66 years!

Still waiting on confirm from my grandpa, but I'm pretty sure my great aunt was in that nursing home. I'll probably be down there tomorrow either way though.

Shitty situation.

Interesting fact: the blast measured 2.1 on the Richter scale.
