Check craigslist. We picked up a $80 monitor for $10.

I know it's not a NEED per say, but I'm almost deaf in one ear so I think it will help in my case.

I tried the cb idea but she shot that down early. She just won't get on my level! Crazy broad.

My buddy setup a security camera on the wall just above the baby crib and connected to his LAN. They use an Ipad to view it and it works spectacular. Sound is excellent and looks good in low light.

The intercom rocks when they are playing and supposed to be in bed. Then taking vids of their reaction as your voice comes out of no where and they hide is priceless.

I do the same. The cameras can do sound/voice, but we have an intercom so we just use that.

Admittedly I do have a standard audio/video baby monitor too for at night. Otherwise it was bright as hell in our room with either device lit up.

Voice activation is a nice feature on them as well. With twins, it gets trickier - but with a single kid should be no big deal.

    LOL, so true!

On Facebook I'm in 2 groups for diabetics, one for insulin pumps and one for the CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor), and I swear, %80 of the people act like they would die and have no control at all over the diabeetus without the devices. I mean really, they help you manage, but fucken A, people have survived for years without it, and lived just fine!

    /rant off...
