Trains and cargo ships run on diesel, which is basically gasoline. Power plants run on other shit that is burned, pretty much anything that will burn. Natural gas, coal, oil (which can be refined into gasoline)...

Octane engines function differently than cetane engines. All gasoline is liquid fuel. All liquid fuel is not gasoline.
