alcoholic?

i couldnt have said it better. i work hard, outside, and sometimes it's physically demanding; and reward myself with a cold beer after work. that usually means 6 - 12oz, or maybe 2-3 24 oz's. BUT i get off work at 3, i'll have a beer or two before i pick my son up at 530, and i dont have another one til he goes to bed around 8. and i am in bed by 10-1030. i feel like i have it in control, and the fact that i WILL NOT touch liquor lets me know in my conscious i am at least addressing my situation. I think having this child has saved my life. I dont go out anymore for the simple fact that i finally have something/someone to live for!

my wife also does a good job at double checking me.

How do you go about talking to a relative about it. Has anyone here had to do that before?

I've been on both sides of the coin, and the simple answer is that nobody other than the alcoholic themselves will be who decides to get help. That's not to say that a conversation with them will fall on deaf ears, and possibly help them come to that conclusion, just set your expectations accordingly.

It was only a few short months ago that I was having a conversation with someone very close to me about doing this sobriety thing together, joking that he will always be trying to catch up to me in terms of time. He was fresh out of a 30 day rehab, and totally committed to doing the deal. Fast forward to last weekend, and his wife moved out because she can't handle it any more, and he's yet again picking himself off of the floor. The job that held on through rehab with high hopes yet again, has also since cut ties, so now he's jobless and alone mere months out of rehab.

I only tell you this to say that it takes what it takes, so don't think that you have the magic words to get someone to "snap out of it." Be positive and supportive, and make sure that you aren't doing anything to enable their behavior.

this too, i dont know anyone who is addicted to weed, but i will say i used to be a habitual smoker. once i put marijuana out of my life the one or two heinekens that used to accompany 3 or 4 bowls got replaced with 3 or 4 more heinekens.
