In 1975, when I was in the 5th grade, we moved to a little town in Arkansas. The school's white/black ratio was 4:1. Those kids wouldn't fight you one-on-one or when you had a friend with you. They would wait and catch you when you were by yourself and then they'd gang up on you to start a fight. We learned to hang in pairs and they left us alone.

One day, a group of thugs cornered my sister and threatened to rape her and talked vulgar to her. The next day, my older brother started beating some asses and he got kicked out of school. Then my dad went up there and told the superintendent that he would be getting his ass beat if those thugs bothered my sister again. It took all of that just to get them to leave her alone.
