Obama didn't have many friends when he first ran for president. Keep in mind who the old guard was in 2008. Guys like Dick Durbin, Robert Byrd, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy were running things. Obama was far from popular among them. They were still in love with Bill Clinton and wanted his wife to win.
