I never looked at the pupils, but they all had the hourglass bands and triangular heads.

Had a rat snake on our porch the last couple summers. First one we killed not knowing what he was. he was coiled up, "rattling" his tail, and striking at everything. I didn't want to have to kill it but the kids and Katrina were not gonna let me just leave it be.
After the fact i got in touch with a snake handler and he confirmed it was a rat snake and told us the only way to tell if a snake indigenous to north Texas is venomous is by it's eyes. All four venomous snakes found here have cat-eye pupils. Non venomous snakes from here all have round pupils.
Next time we found one on our porch we left him be and it was gone in a couple hours. And we never have rats around either so i guess they're doing their job--MarcusComment
