Richmond Ca is a bad place for kids IMO, they call it the iron triangle.

I've seen good people give up everything and devote their lives to try and keep their kids on the straight and narrow, only to end up with shit for kids

no way...not at that age. He's had all the wrong influences around him for a while to fall into that kind of trouble that early.

As parents, my job is to know when my kid is hanging around the wrong crowd and be able to do something about it. Sometimes they get one-up on us and get away with something...but for the most part it's a parents job to intervene and apply what ever measures necessary to make sure they don't get sucked in.

This intervention starts as early as 4th grade, hell, 1st grade for that matter. We've already identified some kids, the same age as ours, that are working their way down the wrong path. And this is due to their parents not doing what they should be doing. So we've cut those kids out of our kids' circle.

I don't know if that makes sense, but I basically won't allow my kids to hang around certain kids that don't meet my standards. As they get older, it's more difficult but by that time, I've instilled my standards and expectations in their head to the point that I hope they can differentiate the right path from the wrong path. It worked with my oldest...some of the ultimatums I gave her were risky, but it worked.

The kids' parents in the OP just gave up, were not around to begin with, or were POS parents.

And not to bash on the kid, but in typical media fashion, the story link has the 12 year old innocent shot

"Kevin arrived only about a month ago, via Community Health for Asian Americans, a partner program in the building that provides mental health and substance abuse counseling among its diverse services for local youth. Kevin needed services; already he was no stranger to Richmond police."
Seems he was into drugs and crime, gang member.
