Graduation. I have attended funerals of employees / coworkers family members, but would never expect a coworker or friend to attend one of my family member's funerals. Unless they knew them / interacted with them as much as me.

Buy the boss a sympathy card and / or send some flowers.

To me, if you didn't know the person that died, why go to the funeral? Give your support to the person that lost the loved one, but the funeral is to honor / remember the person that died.
