Those combis had a pretty spotty history. I remember there being a south African 747 combi that went down in the ocean because of a fire in the cargo hold and the combis had no separate ventilation. Crew got smoked out, tried diving to put out the fire, everyone died.

Extremely far in this case. Extremely.

A conditioned air duct in the sidewall let go. Air noise probably scared the shit out them as they thought they had a structure failure..
As far as some having a fear of flying I'll add this family jewel. My granddad served in WW1 as an Ambulance Driver/Medic. He was stationed near a French airfield. After witnessing so many crashes, he vowed he'd never step foot in a plane. Fast forward to 1988. I tried to get him to fly from Florida to Pa. on my flight passes. Flat out refused! Ended up driving back by himself!

CJ: Re: 747 Combi.. I only remember a bit about that loss. I believe that there was a hint of illegal arms/munitions onboard that caused it. At the time we were reworking the 767 Cargo Fire extinguishing/Bottle System.

That could have sucked if it was more than the interior walls.

Did not know that, I had First Officer Madeline Tompkins on my jumpseat out of ORD years ago. I had no idea who she was until my FO recognized her. Interesting story. I see now the break and combi correlation.
