A friend of mine married an australian dude, and had a kid with him, and she still can't get citizenship. They just moved here when her visa ran out.

That is excessive. At a minimum she should have gotten their version of a green card so the family could stay there and together if they wanted. I think the US makes it too hard to get a green card or other visas for family members and Australia sounds far worse. All that does is make people give up on the legal way, say fuck it, and enter illegally. That doesn't help anyone and sure doesn't help families trying to live together. Why would a country be so against its citizens marrying someone from outside the country?

Australia is as big, if not bigger than the U.S.; I can't remember exactly. Anyways that is alot of coastline to guard 24/7.

You mean by using something like a boat? I doubt they can successfully guard all of it 24/7. I am sure boats get through, plus their government is probably just as incompetent as any other and it probably isn't hard for smugglers to figure out where the easy points to get through are located.
